This October it’s time to celebrate Filipino American History Month. Filipino Americans have a long and rich history in America, with the first “Luzones Indios” setting foot in Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. In October 1992, the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) board of trustees proposed the first annual Filipino American History Month, with official congressional recognition coming in 2009.1,2 What makes Filipino American History Month unique is that this celebration focuses on the history, pursuits, accomplishments, and the legacy of Filipino Americans. Sit down with your family and friends for a kamayan and get a taste of the Philippines around the table. Use this opportunity to talk to your titos and titas about your own family history.3 No matter how you celebrate Filipino American History Month, we hope you take time this month to learn more about the rich and varied history of Filipino Americans that make up our great nation. Salamat and thank you! |
